“It’s Incredible To See The Students Transform In A Few Short Months!”
We have some truly amazing instructors at CBBC. Not only are the experts in their field with a TON of experience, but they’re genuinely nice people who are all about the success of their graduates.
Ann MacKinnon is an instructor with our Business Administration (BA) program and pretty much the nicest person you’ll ever meet. We had the pleasure of talking to her last week about her time at CBBC, her students, and what sort of folks excel in this exciting and powerful program. So keep reading (you’re going to love Ann and this program!).
Q: Hi Ann! It’s so nice to chat with you today. Thank you for making the time. Tell us a bit about yourself. What is your work experience like? How long have you been teaching at CBBC?
Ann MacKinnon: I’m a Cape Breton girl, returned home! After graduating high school I moved to Ontario where I attended school, met my partner, and had two beautiful boys. After 20 years away we decided to quit our jobs, sell our house and make the move to Cape Breton.
My work history and experience is mainly in finance for not-for-profit organizations, construction, and retail. And have enjoyed each for different reasons! I joined the CBBC Family in the spring of 2020, literally a week before the first COVID-19 shut down.
Q: We’re so happy that you came home and joined our team. Our students are so lucky to have you! Speaking of students, what sort of people generally enroll in the BA program?
AM: Honestly, the BA program seems to attract a more mature group of students that are wanting to improve their employment situation. A person with a strong work ethic and an open mind is really going to excel in this field.
Q: That makes sense. This is a great program for people who are looking to get hired just based on the volume of jobs and the universal appeal of the program, right?
AM: Exactly. Literally every organization requires some level of administration. We have students working in real estate, health related fields, not for profits, in marketing and as office managers.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of the job? Is it watching them get that dream job?
AM: Definitely seeing the students succeed. They come in unsure of their abilities, and with the insecurities we all have, and then they have the “I get this” moment! It is incredible to see that transformation in a few short months.
Q: Are there any alumni that you are particularly impressed by?
AM: A girl named Maggie is my shining star. She was a very diligent student but also very shy. She applied for a placement at the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design and has been there ever since. She has combined her appreciation for art and culture, and her education into a role that seems to be made just for her.
Q: So you think that the Business Administration program is a useful must-take for students?
AM: Absolutely! I may be biased but this is such a fantastic program! It is completely comprehensive and the market needs qualified administrative professionals.
So what are you waiting for?
