With the CBBC Career College Aesthetics program offered at our Halifax and Sydney, NS campuses, we will prepare you to be career-ready and meet the requirements to earn your license through the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia. Throughout the Aesthetics program, Industry Experts will come and do theory and hands-on workshops to help you learn the latest in the beauty industry. You will get hands-on practice throughout your entire program through labs and clinic experience in our CBBC Training Salon & Spa in Sydney, Nova Scotia and Regency Training Salon & Spa in Halifax, Nova Scotia. You will have the opportunity to work with products like Quannessence and CND Nail Polish.

Program Outline

  • Career Planning & Salon Business

    Students will be introduced to the planning and management of one’s own career and career goals, including finding career opportunities, navigating through the salon/spa business industry, ownership & operation, developing life skills & human relations, being introduced to professional development, communications, job search & resume building, job skills, sales, and marketing.

  • Chemistry

    Students in this course will gain an understanding of the Basics of Chemistry and its relevance in Cosmetology. Some of the topics that will be covered in both theory and clinical settings will be in the areas of reviewing the PH Scale, forming a deeper understanding of Matter, and receiving instruction in Chemistry within the field of Cosmetology and Aesthetics.

  • Cosmetology Association of NS Act & Bylaws

    Students in this course will receive training in, and gain knowledge of, the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia Act and Bylaws. Students will become familiar with the licensing process and the overall objectives of the Association.

  • Electricity

    Students will gain an understanding of the Basics of Electricity and its relevance in Cosmetology. Some of the topics that will be covered in both theory and practical will include electrical current and their types, electrical measurements, and electrical safety & safety devices.

  • Facial Treatments & Relaxation Massage & Spa Body Treatments

    Through relevant instruction and clinical practice, students will gain strong fundamental skills in applying facial treatments, relaxation massage, and spa body treatments. Students will learn processes and procedures in draping, client consultation, proper & safe use and handling of supplies, equipment, tools & implements, skin analysis, contraindications, types of facial services, basic facial procedures, facial massage, and products & treatments.

  • General Aesthetics Service Preparation

    This course will prepare students with the understanding and skills in the preparation of general Aesthetics services. Areas of focus will include the treatment room, supplies & equipment, implements & functions of each implement, as well as service set up, client consultation and instruction and training in how to recommend products and treatments.

  • General Anatomy & Physiology

    This course will focus on giving students a foundational understanding of the building blocks of the human body and how it relates to Esthetics & Cosmetology. Topics covered will include cells – function, structure & reproduction, types of tissue & function, major organs and their functions, and names of the body systems and their functions.

  • Hair Removal

    This course will give students a base of knowledge and skills in several key areas of study related to the Aesthetics industry. Included in this module, students will learn about the hair growth cycle, set up & prep, client consultation, contraindications, proper & safe use and handling of supplies, equipment, tools & implements, and temporary hair removal methods & procedure(s) for all areas of the body.

  • Labs - Aesthetics

    The College will have special industry-leading guest speakers come in and deliver information relevant to industry trends, techniques, tools, and products. Lab time will also be allocated at the end of the program to the writing of final exams.

  • Makeup Artistry

    Students taking this course will be provided exceptional training in makeup artistry. The training will be in the form of both theory and real-world applications. Training will provide students with the foundational knowledge and skills in the following areas of study: procedures & draping, client consultation, proper & safe use and handling of supplies, equipment, tools & implements, facial anatomy & physiology, color theory, facial shapes & features, makeup products & techniques, makeup applications, day and evening applications, applications for special events, makeup for men, teens, & aging skin, and application of lash enhancements. (Strip Lashes).

  • Nail Sciences

    This module will provide extensive training in both theory and practice in the areas of clinical practice related to nail care & nail technology. Students will be exposed to skills training and best practices related to the application of manicures and pedicures.

  • OHNS

    Students in this course will receive training in, and gain knowledge of, the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia Act and Bylaws. Students will become familiar with the licensing process and the overall objectives of the Association.

  • On the Job Training - OJT

    The OJT program is a program extension that is applicable for all students. A decision of participation in the OJT program will be exercised only by the Cosmetology instructors’ recommendation, and on a case-by-case basis, in accordance with the Student Contract obligations, successful completion of the Course Outline to date, Private Career Colleges Act, Dept. of Labor & Advanced Ed., Act respecting CANS, the Labor Standards Act and any other relevant contributing factors that may arise regarding a specific student and the OJT program. OJT can take place at any Salon/Spa in NS currently registered and in good standing with the Cosmetology Association of NS. The host must agree to complete the training evaluation forms and have Master Cosmetologist(s) who are willing to supervise and positively encourage the skills and abilities of the OJT participant. OJT will take place over a maximum of 4 weeks to complete the 100 hours of training. Program participants who do not have approved OJT placement may continue their course of study for 100 hours in the Cosmetology School in which they are enrolled.

  • Personal Development

    Students will receive instruction to develop foundations for maintaining a healthy mind & body in relation to Aesthetics. Topics covered will include basic nutrition, hygiene, ergonomics, physical presentation & professional image, stress management, rest and relaxation, and exercise.

  • Salon Ecology

    Students enrolled in this module will receive theory and practical skills training in the areas of infection control and universal precautions, including infection control principles and practices, and provincial guidelines for cleaning and sterilization, microbiology and bacteriology, viruses, parasites, infection and immunity.

  • Skin Science & Skin Care

    This course will provide students with an understanding of the history & physiology of the skin. Topics included in the module include the function of the skin, the layers of the skin including the anatomy & function of each layer, skin structure & growth, as well as skin disorders & diseases.

Graduates may obtain employment in day or resort spas, salons, beauty institutes, health clubs, cruise ships and cosmetic firms. They may also be employed as sales representatives for manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of esthetic products or may find opportunities for self-employment
