Program Outline

  • BA Practicum

    This 160-hour course is designed as a culmination of the program. Our Placement Department works with you to arrange a suitable placement with a corporation, or a public or non-profit organization which conducts typical Canadian business practices. In your Practicum term, you could perform, or job shadow or a combination of both, the skills and knowledge acquired in the courses within your program.

  • Business Communications I - English Essentials

    This course will help the student develop the proper communication skills necessary to function in a professional business setting. There will be a review of grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation as they apply to business communication. Students will complete various exercises with the emphasis on improving basic skills in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and apply them to writing assignments and tasks.

  • Business Communications II

    This 20-hour course is designed to help you develop strategies that will make your writing clear, concise and efficient. These in-depth writing techniques are a continuation from Business Communication -English Essentials. You will learn to express yourself more easily and with more confidence by applying the principles of good writing. Throughout the course there will also be an emphasis on developing effective writing and editing techniques.

  • Business Communications III

    This subject has three areas of study: Presentation Skills, Facilitative Management and Interpersonal Communications. Students will learn how to create and deliver effective oral presentations. They will also be introduced to interpersonal problem-solving skills through effective listening and responding skills.

  • Business Management

    This course will enable the student to develop the skills necessary to understand and function in a professional business setting. The course examines the business environment and how to effectively manage within that dynamic. It introduces various topics that serve as a foundation for further study of effective business management.

  • Career Management

    Our Career Management course will introduce students to and teach them how to apply the most effective strategies to achieve employment in the career of their choice. Topics that are covered: effective job search strategies, cover letter and strategic resume writing, interview preparation and effective interviewing skills. Students will also be introduced to online training in Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) so that they will have a better understanding of their role as regards safety at the workplace.

  • Digital Marketing Fundamentals

    Digital marketing has become the primary channel for businesses large and small to communicate with prospective customers. Digital Marketing Fundamentals lays the groundwork for students to understand how online and offline marketing methods work together to deliver results. Students will learn the terms and concepts used in the industry and how they are applied in practical situations.

  • Financial Accounting I - Accounting Fundamentals

    This 40-hour course will introduce the student to accounting practices and their applications in business. The student will learn accounting terminology, fundamental accounting principles and basic accounting functions such as using accounts and preparing basic financial statements.

  • Financial Accounting II - The Accounting Cycle

    This course continues to build on the accounting principles and concepts introduced in Accounting Fundamentals I, introducing the student to the completion of an entire accounting cycle. The student will learn how to set up and maintain special journals, subsidiary Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable ledgers. Cash controls, accounting for GST/HST will also be introduced.

  • Financial Accounting III - Special Journals and Reporting

    Using knowledge gained in the Financial Accounting I and II courses, this subject will focus on the practical application of accounting skills. Topics include: the accrual method of accounting, the cash method of accounting, inventory systems, and the accounting cycle for a merchandising business.

  • Financial Accounting IV - Asset Accounting

    Using knowledge gained in the introductory courses, this subject will focus on the practical application of accounting skills. Topics include: accounting for bad debts, accounting for property, plant, equipment and intangible assets. Students are introduced to the Statement of cash flows and financial reporting analysis.

  • Human Resources Management

    This course is a comprehensive overview of current day personnel and human resource management. This course will introduce the diverse components of human resource functions and its role in the current business environment. Topics to be covered are: the business environment, employee development and evaluation, compensation and benefits, employee rights, safety and representations and strategic issues and challenges in Human Resources Management, in both domestic and global environments.

  • Human Resources Management - Recruitment and Retention

    In the current competitive job market, it is essential for companies to effectively identify and select candidates who not only meet the knowledge, skills and abilities required, but also candidates that are a strong organizational fit. With heavy investments in training the right candidates, companies strive to create environments that retain and retrain.

  • Human Resources Management - Change Management

    Change management is a vital part of every organization. Understanding how change impacts people, how to manage anticipated and unexpected change and supporting staff through those changes can define an organization. In this 40-hour course students will gain an understanding of the theories of change management, what change management could look like in an organization and the strategies to manage change.

  • Marketing

    Marketing is an approach to business that puts the customer at the center of its activities and focuses on satisfying customer needs and wants. While marketing is used by both profit and not-for-profit organizations to meet the demands of the marketplace, this subject introduces students to the fundamental marketing concepts used by profit-oriented business organizations.

  • Microsoft Excel

    Upon successful completion of this course, students will have achieved a core level competency of the Microsoft Excel application. Topics include creating worksheets, formulas, functions, charts, formatting, analysis, templates, and working with multiple worksheets and workbooks.

  • Microsoft PowerPoint

    This 12-hour course is designed to introduce key concepts about creating, modifying, and enhancing a presentation using PowerPoint 2016. You will explore the PowerPoint environment and create a presentation. You will format text on slides to enhance clarity. To enhance the visual appeal, you will add graphical objects to a presentation and modify them. You will also add tables and charts to a presentation to present data in a structured form. You will then finalize a presentation and deliver it.

  • Microsoft Windows/Outlook

    This 20-hour course is designed to provide you with the skills needed to work in Windows OS and MS Outlook. You will learn to use the tools and options available in the MS Windows operating system, manage folders and files, and work with simple applications packaged with the operating system. The Outlook course will provide you with the skills to compose and send emails, schedule appointments and meetings, manage contact information, schedule tasks, create notes, customize the Outlook environment, calendar, and mail messages, and track, share, assign, and quickly locate and organize various Outlook items.

  • Microsoft Word

    As a student in this 40-hour course, you will learn the most important topics of Microsoft Office Word. No prior computer experience is assumed. You will delve into Microsoft Office Word to learn how to create, edit, and format documents and multiple-page reports. Once you have mastered this, you will learn to work with templates, themes, styles, and mail merge. Finally, you will learn advanced techniques, such as automating your work and using advanced online forms.

  • Strategic Web Design

    Website design is undergoing a radical change in how sites are built and how they’re viewed. With a need to be viewable on everything from large screens to the smallest phones, newer methods to deliver and display increasingly complex sites have been created. The increased complexity is being handled with website templates and HTML5 programming. Students will gain an understanding of these changes and how digital marketing professionals are adapting. They also will be able to use templates from Wix to build a fully functional website that showcases their talent.

  • Payroll I

    This course will introduce the student to payroll fundamentals including an examination of government legislation affecting payroll. Students will learn how to calculate and record gross pay, CPP, EI and Income Tax deductions and net pay. In addition, students will also learn how to calculate and record the employer’s share of deductions.

  • Payroll II - Intermediate

    This course will continue to build on the concepts introduced in Payroll l. Topics include remittance requirements relating to CPP, EI and Income Tax, record of employment preparation, annual T4 and T4 summary filing requirements and Workers’ Compensation.

  • Personal Taxation

    This course will introduce the student to personal income taxes using taxation forms and schedules and a personal tax software package.

  • Project Management

    This 60-hour course will help the student develop the skills necessary to understand the foundation of Project Management. The student will be introduced to the environment of Project Management with an overview of various topics that serve as a foundation for further study of Project Management.

  • QuickBooks with Payroll

    In this course, students will be introduced to QuickBooks accounting software for small business activities. Students will learn how to set up new companies, use data files, set up new vendors and customers, and use QuickBooks lists. Students will learn how to process transactions, create reports and graphs and use the QuickBooks Employee Centre.

  • Sage Simply Accounting with Payroll

    The objective of this 40-hour course is to introduce new users to the basic setup and operation of the Sage 50 Simply Accounting System. Students will be taught how to set up, maintain, and manage a bookkeeping and accounting system using Sage 50. Topics include: creating data files, entering common transactions, setting up a company, modifying ledgers and sub ledgers, setting up the chart of accounts and entering account histories, customizing the system, setting up payroll, remittances and taxes, display and print, and period-end processing.
