The CCA program consists of approximately 20 weeks of in-class instruction and 10 weeks of practicum placements. Students will be trained to provide direct client care in-home support agencies, nursing homes, and homes for the aged. Individuals will learn to provide care to meet the various needs of the elderly, disabled, and convalescents. Clinical Placements and Work Experience practicum in both long-term care and home-support agencies must be successfully completed in order to graduate. An interview may be required before accepting students for clinical experience. Students are required to provide their own transportation to clinical placements and work experience practicums. Shift work is an integral part of this occupation. Furthermore, physical demands include moving, lifting, and continued standing. Included in a student’s book fees is a charge of $150. This fee is for individuals who successfully complete all components of the program who will be eligible to write the provincial exam. The Nova Scotia Continuing Care Advisory Committee administers this provincial exam.
