Venipuncture Competency Assessment

The Venipuncture Competency For Independent Phlebotomists (IP) Assessment Program is a one-hour assessment to:

  • Act as an assessment for independent phlebotomy (IP) venipuncture competencies in Nova Scotia, which is a requirement of their specimen acceptance Agreement with the Nova Scotia Health Authority and IWK.
  • Comply with the requirements of the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS), the Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (NSCMLT), and the Medical Laboratory Technology Act (Nova Scotia), and has been endorsed by Nova Scotia Health Authority and the IWK.

During your assessment, you will perform venipuncture using routine venipuncture equipment. Ideally, this collection will be performed on a volunteer. In the event that a volunteer is not available, collections will be performed in a simulated environment.

At the end of the session, participants will have an opportunity to debrief with the facilitator at the end of the session who are licensed, Medical Laboratory Technologists.

You will be required to sign a liability waiver, and all COVID-19 health protocols will be implemented and maintained.

The cost of the assessment is $125.

What Our Graduates Are Saying

This program prepared me and gave me the confidence to enter the real business world. The close knit atmosphere CBBC has, made me very comfortable. Each and every staff member at CBBC was extraordinarily helpful on my journey in obtaining a full-time Administrative Assistant position in Cape Breton.
