Our Dental Assisting program is one of our most popular. Now, to make it even more accessible we’re launching a new distanced learning version  that will allow even more people to enter this exciting and in-demand field!

This new version is really cool! The new Dental Assisting Program (Distance) consists of online, clinical instruction, and a work term placement throughout the program. So, students will  receive 51 weeks of highly structured, full-time, instructor-paced hybrid education that uses  a combination (hybrid) of online, on-campus clinical training, and practicum placement! They’ll spend two days per week in a work-term placement at a dental practice, as well as three days per week of highly structured, remote, and instructor-led online learning. Students also spend five weeks at CBBC’s dental clinic.

The course

Students must secure a clinical placement at a general or specialty dental office for two days (14 hours) per week for the duration of their studies.

The hybrid program is designed with two-day clinical placement experiences throughout the program in order to help reinforce and enhance the course content. To make sure that everyone is on track,  CBBC Career College will confirm these mandatory clinical placement hours regularly throughout the program.

In addition to the two days per week placement at a dental office, all hybrid students spend a mandatory five weeks at CBBC Career College’s Dental Clinic in Sydney.  These five weeks are broken down into two, two-week sessions and one, one-week session of clinical skills.

Learning online is easy with CBBC. our instructors are there for you JUST like they would be if you were in class. The online theory courses use the MOODLE learning management system that includes learning activities, self-assessments, study questions, assignments, tests, and final exams performed online. All clinical courses (five weeks in total) are conducted on-site at CBBC Career College’s Dental Clinic.

New opportunities for currently unregistered dental assistants or dental office employees

This is great for anyone who is looking to enter the field but especially great for someone who already works in a dental office but is looking to move up the ladder. You can keep your job and work with a team you already know to improve your skills and gain new opportunities!

As it stands now, anyone can be an unregistered dental assistant, however this leaves that individual limited to what procedures they are allowed to perform in the dental office. They are a level 1 or ‘chairside’ assistant and are able to be trained “on the job” for duties such as sterilization, seating and greeting patients, documenting, explaining post operative procedures, and mixing cements and suctioning.

At the present time the Dental Act is under review and it is being discussed that there will be a policy put in place that no longer allows a chairside assistant or an assistant that is not certified (by successfully completing the written board exam), or registered with the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia to be able to practice in the province of Nova Scotia.

With that said, A level 2 Dental Assistant, which our program offers, is able to perform many other skills that are not in the scope of practice for a chairside assistant! These skills include, but are not limited to, intra oral skills such as taking impressions, placing and removing matrix bands and wedges, acquiring diagnostic radiographs, removing sutures and surgical dressings, thus saving time and making themselves a more valuable employee!

Your new skills!

Successful completion of online, clinical, and work term components of the program will qualify the student to receive their CBBC Career College diploma. Students must write and successfully pass the National Dental Assisting Examining Board (NDAEB) Examination and may have to take the NDAEB Clinical Practical Exam (CPE) to receive provincial licensing. The tuition costs for the program include both the costs of the written NDAEB examination and the NDAEB CPE Exam.

What Our Graduates Are Saying

I think the thing that has stood out to me the most in the program is how much the teachers care about your success and how they work hard to create a positive environment to learn in. It’s really amazing! They really encourage all the students to celebrate each other’s successes and help each other out. I really struggled with the decision of which school to attend, and I know that I made the right choice.
