The demand (and opportunity) for Continuing Care Assistants has never been higher!

The demand for Continuing Care Assistants (CCAs) in Nova Scotia has never been higher. While there are so many industries right now that are struggling with layoffs and unemployment, the demand in healthcare and particularly for CCAs is growing!

Incentives are now available for Nova Scotians to join this growing and in-demand field. The Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness and CBBC Career College are getting creative. What GREAT news for anyone who is currently looking for a new opportunity!

What is a Continuing Care Assistant?

A CCA provides direct client care in home support agencies, nursing homes, and homes for the aged. They are truly special people who are with their clients  during the most vulnerable point in their lives. This may be  at the end of life, during daily care, or during truly difficult medical situations. In our 20-week CCA training program, students will learn to provide care to meet the various needs of the elderly, disabled, and convalescents through lecture style learning and clinical placements.

Bursaries are now available!

The Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness is trying to end the shortage of CCAs through a new and exciting bursary program! For qualifying students, bursaries of $4,000 from the Nova Scotia Department of Health are available to cover a large chunk of the cost of schooling in this dynamic field.

While not all students will qualify for bursaries, CBBC is an extremely large contributor to the CCA education in our province and as such we have access to a large number of these awards that we know will be a huge financial help to our students. Qualifications vary but students must be committed to staying in the province and working as a Continuing Care Assistant for at least one year after graduation to be eligible.

An exciting partnership with GEM Health Care Group

It’s no surprise to say that COVID-19 has changed nearly every aspect of our lives, and how we access education is no different. To find new, safe ways to educate our  Continuing Care Assistants, CBBC has worked with the regulating body of CCAs (the Health Association of Nova Scotia) to come up with a new way to deliver our programming, and we cannot be more excited to roll it out.

Students in the CCA program will now learn theory at home through Zoom for three weeks before switching to three weeks of practical learning. This cycle will continue for the duration of the course. Practical experience will take place in a GEM Healthcare run nursing home with students partnered up with an instructor.

But the really exciting part? As long as students maintain academic excellence, diligence, and meet the GEM Health Care Group employment standards, GEM Health Care Group will offer them a job upon graduation!
