So let’s get real: a modern career in marketing isn’t much like an episode of Mad Men (there aren’t morning martini breaks or glamorous dinners every night). But, while the glamorous 1960’s advertising agencies have evolved the need for creative and enthusiastic new marketers is still very much alive!

So what is marketing?

Marketing is defined by the American Marketing Association as “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.” At its most basic level, marketing seeks to match a company’s products and services to customers who want access to those products.

So in terms of the profitability of a company, the folks in the marketing department have a big job to do! It is their job to decide the activities that a company will undertake to promote the buying or selling of a product or service. This includes advertising, selling, and delivering products to consumers or other businesses. People who work in a corporation’s marketing and promotion departments seek to get the attention of key potential audiences through advertising, targeting promotions to certain audiences to get attention. This may involve fun stuff like celebrity endorsements, catchy phrases or slogans, memorable packaging or graphic designs and overall media exposure.

The job

Working in the world of marketing you’ll have a TON of different career paths and directions to choose from. You can work in public relations, media relations, internal communications, or in a traditional marketing department! But even those different streams of ‘marketing’ can lead you to different places.

For example, if you choose to enter the field of marketing as a marketing coordinator, which is a pretty standard entry level position” you may choose to work any number of places in a job structured any number of ways. You may be employed by a company that is asking you to help market the products that they produce directly. Or, alternatively you may be working for a marketing agency that sells your services to the company to help sell their products. Or, you may work for the company that makes the products, but be managing others who work at an agency to do the work. There are so many options!

Key skills

To thrive in the world of marketing you need fantastic communication skills. You’ll also do well with great organization (there are lots of moving parts!) and the ability to multitask. What Our Graduates Are Saying

I think the thing that has stood out to me the most in the program is how much the teachers care about your success and how they work hard to create a positive environment to learn in. It’s really amazing! They really encourage all the students to celebrate each other’s successes and help each other out. I really struggled with the decision of which school to attend, and I know that I made the right choice.
