Become A Licensed Dental Assistant On The Job With Our NEW Distance Program

Did you know that the Dental Act is currently under review in Nova Scotia, and a policy may be put in place that threatens the jobs of chairside, unlicensed dental assistants? Should the changes pass, unlicensed chairside dental assistants (or an assistant that is not certified by successfully completing the written board exam or registered with the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia) will not be able to practice in the province of Nova Scotia.

But fear not! We have a wonderful opportunity for unlicensed assistants to become licensed while on the job!

Our new Dental Assisting Program (Distance) consists of online, clinical instruction, and a work term placement (at your current job) throughout the program. So, students will receive 51 weeks of highly structured, full-time, instructor-paced distance education that uses  a combination of online, on-campus clinical training, and practicum placement! You’ll spend two days per week in a work-term placement at a dental practice, as well as three days per week of highly structured, remote, and instructor-led online learning. Students also spend five weeks at CBBC’s dental clinic.

The program

If you’re not already working as an unlicensed dental assistant and want to take this course, that’s obviously cool too. Students in that situation must secure a clinical placement at a general or specialty dental office for two days (14 hours) per week for the duration of their studies.

The program is designed with two-day clinical placement experiences throughout the program in order to help reinforce and enhance the course content. To make sure that everyone is on track, CBBC Career College will monitor these mandatory clinical placement hours regularly throughout the program.

In addition to the two days per week placement at a dental office, all distance students spend a mandatory five weeks at CBBC Career College’s Dental Clinic in Sydney. These five weeks are broken down into two, two-week sessions and one, one-week session of clinical skills.

New opportunities

Even if unlicensed dental assistants are allowed to keep working in Nova Scotia, there are plenty of benefits to getting licensed. A level 2 Dental Assistant, which our program offers, is able to perform many other skills that are not in the scope of practice for a chairside assistant! These skills include, but are not limited to, intra oral skills such as taking impressions, placing and removing matrix bands and wedges, acquiring diagnostic radiographs, removing sutures, and surgical dressings. An increased skill set generally comes with an increased salary (and that’s something we can all appreciate).
