Calling all budding hairstylists! Are you thinking about going to school to do hair but you’re not sure what that will look like? (What is school like? Will you find the skills you need to build a career when you graduate? Will the instructors be nice?) Well we wanted to take the guesswork out of the going-back-to-school process by chatting with someone who is actually experiencing it!
Anthony Grant is a cosmetology student at CBBC’s Regency Training Salon right now and was kind enough to answer some questions about the process and how his education is going (spoiler alert: he’s doing fabulously!)
Q: Hi Anthony! Thank you so much for sitting down to chat with us today! What program exactly are you currently taking at CBBC Career College?
Anthony Grant: I’m taking the cosmetology program from CBBC and will be graduating in June of 2021.
Q: There are a lot of options out there. What specifically made you choose CBBC Career College for cosmetology?
AG: I chose CBBC Career College because I had heard great things about the school from other hairstylists in the city. I like that the school shows you the different types of work environments that are offered in the cosmetology world. It really allows you to consider all of the different paths that you can pursue with this sort of education.
Q: What are you hoping to gain from your education?
AG: After I complete my education and become a licensed stylist I want to work for a local company that focuses on inclusion for everyone. It’s my dream to make a name and a brand for myself (and build an amazing clientele) so that one day I can open my own salon! I want to also work in the fashion industry or movie industry just so I can get experience in every aspect that cosmetology has to offer. I’m really like a sponge. I want to know everything!
Q: Those sound like really fantastic aspirations! Have the staff and everyone at CBBC been supportive of those goals and your education?
AG: Everyone at CBBC has been wonderful! My teachers Debbie and Katie have been nothing but caring and encouraging. My classmates and I are also supportive of each other, and honestly I feel like the school is just one big family! I have never felt such support in my life and I’m so happy I’m there.
Q: You’ve already kind of answered this but where do you see yourself after graduation?
AG: Initially I want to work for an independent company in the city. Somewhere I can be myself and let my artistic mind go to work! One day though I really would like to open my own salon. There are a lot of opportunities in this industry and options to do different things. I want to experience as much as I can!
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is considering a program at CBBC Career College?
AG: The advice I would give to someone about going to CBBC is go for it! I know we all have a lot going on in our lives especially with COVID and we’re all trying to figure out the new normal, but if this is something you’ve always wanted to do and accomplish no matter how old you are just go for it. It will be one of the best decisions in your life! I’m 28 and I finally went to school for something I truly love. Age is but a number and it’s never too late to follow your dreams !
