Education is a powerful tool to get you job ready!

Are you one of the thousands of people in Nova Scotia who are looking for a job right now? We don’t envy you. While sometimes looking for a new job opportunity can be fun, right now it’s downright stressful. With unprecedented  temporary and permanent layoffs happening across the province (and the country!)  due to COVID-19, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find employment.

What’s making it really hard is that retail sales and restaurants are two of the hardest hit industries. While these are great jobs to have in a normal economy, today it means that there are a lot of workers hitting the job search making normally easy-to-get jobs hard to find.

Think about it; if so many people who are laid off all come from the same employment background, they’ll all have a lot of the same skills. If everyone’s resume says ‘great with people!’ and  ‘works will under pressure!’ it can be hard to make your resume jump off the page when you’re out on the job hunt. You know you’re the best candidate for the job, but do they?

So how do you stand out amongst the competition so that you can stop messing with ‘jobs’ and start building a career that will last a lifetime? Education!

The current job market

An article posted by the CBC reported that Nova Scotia lost 50,000 jobs in April alone due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As if that wasn’t bleak enough, Stats Canada currently lists the Canadian unemployment rate somewhere round 12%. better than it was but definitely WAY LOWER than it should be.

Yes things are starting to rebound, but slowly and differently. Restaurants and retail stores that were closed  are opening back up again but with reduced capacity and less than normal traffic. This means that staffing levels continue to be depressed. It also means that permanent closures due to COVID-19 related sales drops become more and more common.

The job market is flooded with people looking for jobs and there are very few jobs to be had.

So what can you do?

The Times Colonist reported recently that high school graduates who enter the labour force straight out of high school are not faring as well as previous generations. That’s partly because 88 percent of working-age Canadians have already graduated from high school and the competition for jobs which require only high school graduation is fierce. We go back to what we said before, if you all have the same skills you all have an equal chance to get the gig!

But it’s not all bad news. They also reported that Canadian high-school graduates who pursue some level of post-secondary education or training do much better financially in the long run! Why? Because you’re more skilled so you can get better jobs much more easily. All of the sudden your soft skills like ‘leadership’ and ‘great communicator’ combine with hard skills like “Diploma in Business Administration” and your resume is suddenly the best for the position.
